Sweet and Spicy (Baked Sweet Potato) Fries

Sweet Potatoes are the Luigi to the regular Potato’s Mario. Luigi is a superior man. He can jump higher and he is much taller…. but Mario takes in all the credit while poor little Luigi sits in a pool of sorrow and abject dismissal.

One second, I have to make sure I am alone before typing this……

Right ok let’s get this done. Sweet Potatoes are much better than normal white potatoes. As an Irish person that was difficult to say. Physically difficult. Like in 1984 when Winston Smith is forced to pronounce 2+2=5. Sweet Pototoes are so much better. They are more nutritious than regular spuds and even more importantly they are much cheaper! 1.50 a kilo vs up to 3.50 a kilo! Holy shitsnacks Batman that is a lot of money for an Irish potato based family.

Some quick notes.

  • If you wash the spuds make sure to dry them before baking. Nobody likes a soggy fry.
  • Keep them skins on people! Lots of goodness in them
  • When cutting the sweet potato, cut them to small chip sizes. Not chipper sized chips. They would not cook as well. Think oven chip sizes!

Sweet and Spicy (Baked Sweet Potato) Fries

Ingredients

  • 4-5 Medium Sweet Potatoes (Chopped into Fries)
  • 1.5 tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 1 heaped tablespoon Smoked Paprika
  • 1 heaped tablespoon Cinnamon
  • 2 Cloves of Garlic (Smashed and Diced into a paste)
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Directions

Step 1. Preheat the oven to full temp! Not grill, just the oven. Then wash and thoroughly dry the sweet potatoes if needed
Step 2. Chop the sweet potatoes into chips/fries
Step 3. In a large sandwich bag or large bowl place all the sweet potatoes
Step 4. Add the Olive Oil, Cinnamon, Garlic, Salt, Pepper and Paprika to the bowl with the fries.
Step 5. Toss them all together until they are all evenly coated
Step 6. On a large baking tray spread the fries out and ensure they are not over crowding the pan. They should all touch the bottom of the tray!
Step 7. Put them in the oven and then lower the temperature to 200 Degrees
Step 8. Cook for 15 minutes and then take them out and turn them all to ensure full cooking.
Step 9. After a further 10-15 minutes in the oven take them out once they are crispy to the touch.
